California School of Dental Assisting (CSODA), a school for clinical training of dental assistants, has found that dental assistants held about 267,000 jobs in 2004, and there are currently more than 120,000 licensed dental hygienists nationwide. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects employment of both dental hygienists and dental assistants to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2014, ranking these dental careers among the fastest growing occupations.  

According to the BLS, median hourly earnings of dental assistants were $13.62 in May 2004; the highest 10 percent earned more than $19.97 an hour. Median hourly earnings of dental hygienists were $28.05 in May 2004; the highest 10 percent earned more than $40.70 an hour.
